Objective pupillometry shows that perceptual styles covary with autistic-like personality traits

چکیده

We measured the modulation of pupil size (in constant lighting) elicited by observing transparent surfaces black and white moving dots, perceived as a cylinder rotating about its vertical axis. The direction rotation was swapped periodically flipping stereo-depth two surfaces. Pupil modulated in synchrony with changes front-surface color (dilating when black). magnitude pupillary larger for human participants higher Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ), consistent local perceptual style, attention focused on front surface. surface color, correlation AQ, equally strong passively viewed stimulus. No other indicator, including involuntary pursuit eye movements, covaried AQ. These results reinforce our previous report similar bistable stimulus (Turi, Burr, & Binda, 2018), go to show that illusory motion is not necessary effect, or dependence

Pupillometry reveals perceptual differences that are tightly linked to autistic traits in typical adults

The pupil is primarily regulated by prevailing light levels but is also modulated by perceptual and attentional factors. We measured pupil-size in typical adult humans viewing a bistable-rotating cylinder, constructed so the luminance of the front surface changes with perceived direction of rotation. In some participants, pupil diameter oscillated in phase with the ambiguous perception, more di...

Autistic traits and adult attachment styles

This study examined the relationship between autistic traits and adult attachment styles in a non-clinical sample of 326 university students. Multiple regression analysis was used to predict both attachment avoidance and attachment anxiety from levels of self-reported autistic traits. A significant unique relationship between autistic traits and attachment avoidance was found after controlling ...

'Autistic' traits in non-autistic Japanese populations: relationships with personality traits and cognitive ability.

We explored the relationships between 'autistic' traits as measured by the AQ (Autism-Spectrum Quotient; Baron-Cohen et al., J. Autism Develop. Disord. (2001b) 31 5) and various personality traits or cognitive ability, which usually coincide with autistic symptoms, for general populations. Results showed the AQ was associated with tendencies toward an obsessional personality as defined by the T...

Autistic - like Personality Traits in Neurotypical Adults : Examining Possible Differences in the Ease , Speed and

The social psychological concept of self-other overlap describes how identities and cognitive representations of people tend to merge as they become closer to one another. Because greater self-other overlap tends to be associated with such positive characteristics as closeness and intimacy, it has generally been considered a desirable trait in relationships. However, these positive characterist...

Autistic Traits and Enhanced Perceptual Representation of Pitch and Time.

Enhanced basic perceptual discrimination has been reported for pitch in individuals with autism spectrum conditions. We test whether there is a correlational pattern of enhancement across the broader autism phenotype and whether this correlation occurs for the discrimination of pitch, time and loudness. Scores on the Autism-Spectrum Quotient correlated significantly with the pitch discriminatio...
